We are Talking about four sets of bunk beds Dutch! The existing enclosure was dripping wet when I got there all the factors prompted me to call & ask you to please upgrade. Secondly the towel bar. Deciding on the right bathroom tile design for your home will not be a simple matter when you start your remodeling project; deciding on a style however, is easier said than done but there is not point redecorating until the choice has been made. There are a variety of designs and options available that appeal to a number of differing tastes as well as range of budgets. The most popular styles; the harlequin tile design, marble and natural stone are also traditional but the more colorful tiles are also gaining acceptance.

If you don't know what the harlequin bathroom tile looks like; imagine a white tile that has smaller black diamond shapes in a grid like pattern imprinted on them and you have the harlequin style. Sometimes these tiles are available in other colors but the traditional black and white oblong tile is the most popular and effective.

My favorite is the black and white design as the effect it has is hard to match and always improves the look of a bathroom. If you use these tiles around a clean white Victorian style bath tub on four feet with chrome fittings you can imagine how striking this looks.

Although this gives a stunning effect, chrome is renowned for leaving fingerprints so may require daily cleaning. This is something particularly relevant if you have young children, so may not be the best style for you.

But it is the classic white tile with small black squares which is my favorite which has a much cleaner look and is normally available without having to place a special order. If you have a little more to spend you may want to consider marble in your bathroom tile design and although it is expensive it will provide an unparalleled look and feel which everyone will admire.

If cost is an option then there are ways in which you can have the best of both worlds by having the main design made up of a bathroom tile that is moderately priced. It is then just a matter of finding a design that will complement what you have already chosen to create a new pattern and then it doesn't matter if the new tiles cost more as you won't be using them as much.

No matter what design you choose you probably want to consider investing in a professional for installation. Of course you will save a great deal of money if you carry out the tiling yourself. If there are problems, it will waste time and if then you have to bring in a professional, it will cost considerably more to finish your bathroom remodeling project.

Measuring For Curtains - The Complete "Do-it-Yourself" Guide

Measuring for and hanging curtains is straightforward in many situations and can be done by anyone competent in DIY (do-it-yourself).

However, there are some situations where it is advisable to employ an expert. These include:

• Bay windows


• Slot windows; very narrow, tall windows


• Windows without sufficient wall space above the window for a pole/track


• Windows without wall space or on either side


• Non-rectangular windows (e.g. circular, triangular,)

But for most situations you will be using either a curtain track or pole across a flat rectangular window. So there are only two measurements of importance. When measuring use a sturdy metal tape measure, have a spirit level handy to check whether poles, batten, floors etc are truly level. Use proper safe steps if you are working at height and for large windows have an assistant hold the other end of the tape. The old adage "measure twice and cut once" holds true!

Measuring curtain width

Start by measuring the width of the window horizontally across the recess occupied by the window & its frame. [Note the width of a window is not the width of the glazing.] Now add 20-30cm (8-12"), on each side since the track or pole should extend beyond each side of the window to enable the curtains to be drawn well back. A large window has more fabric in the curtain and so needs more space either side to pull back completely. If there is insufficient space on either side of the window you may have to adjust your design and it would be better to get some expert assistance.

You may find a pre-existing wooden batten above the window and this should similarly extend beyond the window aperture. If it does not you may consider replacing or extending the batten. If you are fitting a track then the batten will be useful, whereas if you are fitting a pole the batten can be an obstruction. When you buy a pole make sure that the pole length (distance between finials) is equal to or greater than the required width and ensure that you can cut the pole length down to the desired size.

Measuring curtain drop

Curtain drop is the distance between the top and bottom of the fabric in the finished curtain, and it depends on the style of curtain heading, positioning of the pole or track and the position of the bottom of the curtain. When installing a curtain pole aim to position it above the window so that the top of the curtain fabric is at least 10cm / 4inches above the top of the window recess.

• Curtain Poles with rings: As a rule the top of the curtain should be just below the rings so measure the drop from the bottom of the ring.


• Curtain pole with eyelet curtains: In this situation there are no curtain rings and the top of the curtain will be above the pole. Measure the drop from the top of the pole and add 3.5cm to aloe for the amount of curtain that will be above the pole.


• Curtain poles with tab top curtains measure drop from the top of the pole.

For all curtains you need to decide where the bottom will finish:

• Sill length: the curtain should finish 1cm above the sill (but note that this will let more light into the room).


• Below sill length; often curtains finish part way between the sill and a wall mounted radiator. Sometimes they hang over the radiator but this channels warm air up behind the curtain and so does not help keep the room warm. Decide where you want the fabric to end.


• Full length; the curtain finishes 1.5cm above the floor. This measurement needs precision because many floors are not absolutely level. Measure the drop from an installed pole or track in three places, the centre and to the left & right. Work with the smallest measurement but double check that the track or pole is level. If in doubt check the slope of the floor.


• Pooled; compared with full length curtains these usually have an extra 30cm /12 inches of fabric to pool onto the floor

Finally

Once you have width and drop give these figures to your curtain maker who will be able to calculate the quantity of fabric you will need and the cost of making up the curtains. You will also need to agree on the curtain heading and on the type of lining for your curtains. All this may seem hard work but you will end up with bespoke made to measure curtains that fit your window perfectly; something that factory made curtains rarely can achieve.

What is Emulsion Paint?

You started redecorating your house but you are not sure you have picked the right paint in order to obtain the best results in all the rooms of your house. Here are some tips regarding home painting using emulsion paint.

The paint becomes harder wearing as the shine increases; the painting specialists usually offer matte, eggshell, silk, satin and full gloss ranges.

Emulsion paints are normally used for walls and ceilings. There are three such types of emulsions: vinyl matt, vinyl satin (used on areas that can be washed or sponged) and vinyl silk emulsion specific to kitchens and bathrooms. There are also special water based types of emulsions created for woodwork which may be easy to apply, but are not as hard-wearing as oil-based paints.

Emulsion paints may contain certain substances like fillers, catalysts, stabilizers, emulsifiers, adhesion enhancers, flattens or texturizes which produce different results: thicken the film, support the structure of the emulsion paint or increase its volume. Also, they may contain a lot of additives to produce various properties like: antifreeze, foam control, bacterial growth control and pigment stability.

Furthermore, emulsion paint can be applied either as gas (aerosol) or as liquid. Generally, you will apply it by means of brushes, paint rollers and other instruments. Once it is applied, paint can be blended with other painted regions within a certain interval of time (known as "open time"). This interval can be extended by addition of white spirit or other glycols.

This is important to ensure that the tiles at the edge of the room or walls are not small pieces or fillers that will change the look of your design. If you choose not to use spacers and guess at the amount of space in-between each tile, this could throw off the whole room and your grout lines will not be even. You want to keep your tile in a grid; this will allow you to construct a symmetrical finish to your project.

The principle of using spacers is for your tile to be lined up straight. When choosing spacers the size of space will determine consistent width of your finished grout line. When you are looking for the different sizes of spacers the traditional sizes are 1/4", 1/2", 3/4", 1/8", 1/16". The most common spacers used tend to be ¼ or 3/8 inch. There is no rule to why these sizes are the most common used, however they tend to give most tile a nice proportional look after the grout is finished.

The size of the tile and the look you are going for will determine the size of tile spacers you will pick. There actually is not a specific rule to what size spacer you will be using. If you were to have a 10x10 tile you want to use the spacer that would fit best in your project for less cutting and also that will put your tile wall to wall or end to end.

Choosing the best spacer for your tile can be very easy if you know a few tips, for instance if you are tiling on an uneven floor that you are not going to fix before tiling you want to choose the smallest spacer for a small grout line this will help keep the maintenance up, your grout will stay put and you will not have to re grout as often.

Spacers come in different types and styles. The original spacer is a cross-like plastic tee you that you can find in any hardware store. You can also find round top spacer that has a tee on the bottom and a line or knob on the top for easy removal. All spacers are made of a washable and reusable material such as plastic. If you keep your spacers washed up they will last a very long time for your next tiling project.

When you are tiling ceramic tile, porcelain tile, travertine, marble, or Saltillo tile you want find the grout that best matches your tile. Grout comes in many different colors and brands. If you are looking for warmth on a bathroom floor and you are laying down a light porcelain tile you can choose a darker color grout. If you are using porcelain tile in a larger room you can pick a lighter color grout than what the tile color is and this will allow your room to have a large open look.

The purpose of tile grout is to close the space between the tiles so they bond tightly together. This also keeps water and other substances out of the cracks of the tile.

When you choose your spacer size you can use new modern styles you can choose a very large tile such as an 18x18 tile and use small grout line this will give your floor and house a contemporary look. If you are using small 4x4 tiles you can pick a larger grout line such as a 3/4 grout line these ideas are more edgy styles that you would not be used to seeing in past tiling.

When you make your final choice of tile spacer size, you should be aware that your tile and grout will need maintenance. You should wash and reseal your tile and grout once a year. You can use the brush on or spray sealer, allow time to dry before walking or laying items on your tile.

The principle of using spacers is for your tile to be lined up straight. When choosing spacers the size of space will determine consistent width of your finished grout line. When you are looking for the different sizes of spacers the traditional sizes are 1/4", 1/2", 3/4", 1/8", 1/16". The most common spacers used tend to be ¼ or 3/8 inch. There is no rule to why these sizes are the most common used, however they tend to give most tile a nice proportional look after the grout is finished.

The size of the tile and the look you are going for will determine the size of Tile spacers you will pick. There actually is not a specific rule to what size spacer you will be using. If you were to have a 10x10 tile you want to use the spacer that would fit best in your project for less cutting and also that will put your tile wall to wall or end to end.

If you are using porcelain tile in a larger room you can pick a lighter color grout than what the tile color is and this will allow your room to have a large open environment.

The primary function of tile grout is to fill the space between tiles and bond them tightly together. This also keeps water and other substance out of the cracks of the tile.

When you choose your spacer size you can use new modern styles you can choose a very large tile such as an 18x18 tile and use small grout line this will give your floor and house a contemporary look. If you are using small 4x4 tiles you can pick a larger grout line such as a 3/4 grout line these ideas are more edgy styles that you would not be used to seeing in past tiling.

When you make your final choice of tile spacer size, you should be aware that your tile and grout will need maintenance. You should wash and reseal your tile and grout once a year. You can use the brush on or spray sealer, allow time to dry before walking or laying items on your tile.

The Best Way to Get a Nasty Pet Stain Out

When it comes to cleaning pet urine stains from carpet it can become a difficult task, and every carpet cleaners nightmare. I will be explaining a couple of ways to remove pet stains in this article. The fist step that needs to be taken before any treating or cleaning is done is the urine examining step. There is a special black lights to help you find out where these urine infected areas are. Once those areas are spotted we examine them closely and determine weather the pad has been damaged and needs to be replaced or in some cases the urine did not penetrate through the pad than the pad could be saved with a special sanitation and disinfecting pet urine treatment.

If the pad needs to be replaced we carefully remove all the furniture from the area where the pad needs to be changed. Once all of the furniture is moved the carpet is then pulled out and rolled up so that the infected area could be reached. A piece of the infected pad is then cut and taken out. The entire area is than sanitized and deodorized so that there is no bacteria left.

A new piece of pad is then cut to fit the area where the previous pad has been cut out and is then stapled down. The carpet is stretched and tucked back. The whole rooms needs to be cleaned with a hot water extraction machine so that its fresh and all the pet odor is gone.

In cases where the pad has not been damaged than a special pre-conditioning treatment is taken into place. The carpet is pre-treated first letting the products dissolve deep into the pile of the carpet for about 30 minutes. The carpet is than thoroughly steam cleaned sanitized and deodorized.

If you have a pet that is bound to urinate on the carpet it is highly recommended to have the carpet scotch guarded so that if your pet decides go to the bathroom on the carpet the urine will not dissolve into the pile leaving the pad no chance of getting damaged. 30 Ways to Display Art and Photos

It's so easy these days to simply grab a camera or cell phone and snap a picture of whatever catches your eye. You may have thousands of photos just lying around. And that doesn't count all of your other artwork like paintings and prints. So what is a person to do with all of these treasures that could never be parted with? There are many creative ways to hang and display art, and this article is full of such ideas. It will be hard to pick just a few!

The general rule of thumb for hanging objects on the wall is to hang them at eye level. They will simply be more pleasing to look at if you don't have to look way up or down to see them. If you are hanging pieces in a group, think of all of them as one big picture. In these cases it may be easier to cut out scraps of paper the same size as your art and position them on the floor before actually going for the hammer. (Incidentally, odd numbered groupings always look the best.) Another important consideration is size - make sure the scale of your art matches the size of the wall and furniture. Lastly you will want to consider lighting. While objects and pictures do not need to be spotlighted, often times the art will be even more appealing if you focus a beam of light on it. Now that we have the basics of hanging art pieces we can talk about ways to arrange them. Here are some ideas:

Ways to Arrange Your Art on the Wall:

1. Hang several pictures in a row, either horizontally or vertically. You could have just three or as many as you need to fill up your wall. It's a good way to keep your eyes moving around the room, too.

2. You can also offset them. Take two or more pictures and hang one. Then step the other one down by a few inches. It is sort of like hanging them on a diagonal.

3. Place four similarly shaped objects in a square to create a box shape. If you have six or more you could always do a rectangle.

4. Try placing art in a collage on your wall. Find several different objects such as paintings, photos, and architectural art and mix them up in a pleasing way. Keep them fairly close together and remember the rule of three.

5. Hang photos above a staircase. Echo the shape of your stairs by staggering the items up the wall like a set of steps.

6. Arrange your art in themes. If you have a bunch of botanicals, group them all together instead of placing them separately in different parts of your home.

Ways to Hang and Frame Your Art:

7. Frame your ordinary pictures in a unique way. For example, you could use silk flowers or evergreen garland to surround the piece. Simply glue them to the existing frame and hang.

8. Hang photos or pictures from ribbon or wire. You could even hang multiples together the same way by hanging a rod on the wall and stringing the photos from it on ribbon.

9. Arrange art around a doorway or window. Start at the bottom and go up one side, over the top, and down the other. The pieces should be small and not too busy if you do this.

10. Group pictures together in a collage or one of the other suggested shapes. Then take a piece of molding and build a frame big enough to surround the whole group and hang it on the wall around the pieces. Or you could just use paint and create a faux frame on the wall.

11. Do you have a landscape picture of the beach or countryside? Consider buying some inexpensive plastic shutters and putting them on either side of the item for a window effect.

12. Look through every room in your house and see where you might be able to sit some pictures. Tops of cabinets and dressers work well, as do desks, the top of your TV, or even near the jacuzzi in the master bathroom.

13. Do you have a space between your kitchen cabinets and the ceiling? This is a perfect spot to display some small art.

14. Got a fireplace? Try putting some photos or paintings on the mantle - don't hang them above, just sit them on top. Enhance the photo with a couple of well-chosen accessories.

15. If you have a curio cabinet that is not really being used for curios, you can always put art inside instead.

16. Do you own a piano? The top of an upright, or even a grand piano, is a great place for art items.

17. If your piece of art is relatively large, try sitting it on the floor. Lean it against a wall out of the way of kids, pets, and heavy traffic and watch the smiles you are sure to get.

18. Hang up a shelf, set your pictures on top and lean them against the wall. It is a nice change from hanging them by a nail.

20. If you are simply looking for a unique way to display your photos on a table, try a vignette. For example, gather three portrait photos, a couple of your favorite landscape paintings, a tall candlestick and some greenery and arrange them on the tabletop. It will make them seem more important if you group the items together.

21. Hang three or four large pictures in a square or rectangle above your bed for an instant and unique headboard.

22. If the artwork is weather-resistant or can be made to withstand the elements, try hanging a piece or two outside. The front door makes a bold statement when adorned with a favorite piece of art.

23. Do you have one of those bath and shower combos that don't quite reach to the ceiling? If you have a picture that can withstand the steam and heat of the shower (behind glass or enclosed in a metal frame for example), hang it in this blank area to add interest.

24. Another idea for those heat and steam resistant pieces is to hang them above the stove as a backsplash. Just be sure you can wipe them clean.

25. If you have one of those big sterile bathroom mirrors you can always hang a photo in front of it to make it more appealing. Take a piece that will match the décor in your bath, find a complementary ribbon, and hang it in the center of the mirror (from the wall above). This will add interest while still leaving plenty of mirror to use.

26. Take three large pieces of wood, hinge them together accordion style, cover them with fabric, and use them as a room divider screen. Hang photos, pictures and all kinds of other art on your "new wall".

27. Using the same idea, construct a small screen for in front of your fireplace. It is a great spot to hang seasonal art for the summer when the fireplace is not in use. Just be careful to use flame retardant materials near working fireplaces.

28. Create a coffee table to display your photos. Purchase a table that fits with your décor, or use the one you already have, and get a piece of glass cut to the size of the table top. Arrange your photos on the table, then lay the glass on top for a unique, useful and waterproof art gallery.

29. If you have a picture or painting that is around 16 by 20 inches, make it into a side table. Attach the art to a piece of wood cut to the same size, then add legs you can buy at any home improvement store. Paint if you wish. Make sure you have the top covered in glass or Plexiglas, and you have an instant side table.

30. Create a shelf out of art. Take a piece of art or a special photo and get a flat frame to put it in. Nail a small piece of wood that is the same width as the frame and a couple of inches deep to the bottom. Paint it the same color as the frame, hang the photo on your wall, and you are ready to accessorize with a small bud vase, miniature collectables, or even spices in the kitchen.

Installing a shower faucet is not a herculean task. If you know the right tricks it is as easy as conjuring up a rabbit in mid-air. Here is how to install a shower faucet in 7 easy steps.

Before starting the installation here are few things you need to take care.

• Check the supply pipe for leaks.
  


• Replace wall with moisture resistance dry wall as base for wall covering.
  


• Always clean the pipe thread and apply a new pipe joint compound.
  


• Run hot and cold water lines to shower mixing valve attached.
  


• Plan for a trap door in wall.

• First you can connect the shower in two ways. You can either choose the conventional method with copper pipes or you can opt for PEX pipes. The plastic pipes are easy to install when compared to the copper pipes.

• Now position the valve so that UP indication points upward and then connect the hot and cold water pipes to each side of the valve. When welding them take care to see that overheating does not take place. You can also use welding adapters if required. Secure the valve inside the wall and connect the raise tube and spout pipe in welded adapters. If valve is without spout then use a brass cap to block the outlet that will not be used. Put the shower in place. This completes the installation of the valve.
  


• Next to install the faucet handle slide the decorative plate in the valve and position the handle screw adapter on cartridge using hexagonal key.
  


• Now to install the shower head connect the upper outlet to shower head supply pipe after applying Teflon tape. Wrap clockwise the shower head's pipe filets with Teflon tape. Manually screw shower head using adjustable wrench.
  


• Finally to install the spout turn the spout on copper pipe so that set screw faces up. Tighten the screw with hexagonal key and then turn spout to normal position.
  


• Last but not the least open the hot and cold water supply and check if there is no leak. Next open the faucet to lukewarm position to release all the air caught in the pipes.
  

That's it. You are done. Now you can show off your skills to your wife or your neighbor.

Tub and Tile Reglazing Advice

With the current strain on the economy and the housing market , it is becoming more and more common to "make do with what we have" which means instead of remodeling we are restoring.

The question lies here, is it cost effective? Is it going to last? What is the maintenance involved? Why are you going to charge me $450 to re-glaze my tub when I can buy a new one for $200? These are all quality questions which deserve quality answers.

Let's start with cost. First of all, the average cost of a tub install is anywhere between $1,400 and $2,500 and that does not factor in the tub surround. When your old tub is removed the tile at the base of the tub must be demolished. It is possible that a "good" installer can demo in such a way that you only have to repair the first row or two of tile. The reality is if it is older than 10 years finding a match for the tile will probably be impossible and will lead to a complete re-tile. Now, you are looking at about $4,000 to $8,000 just to replace the tub and is this cost effective for you? Be prepared from the moment you decide to dress up that tub to make this decision.

Now, a good re-glaze can last better than 10 years if done properly and there is a process which will ensure this. Preparation, product and technique are the key to a long lasting finish. If this technique is not followed your re-glaze will last anywhere from 1 day to 2 years. Two years may sound like a lot but when another company has to go in and strip the old finish off add another $500 to the re-glaze for a total of $950 to have it re-glazed again. This is not cost effective. If you're going to do it, do it right the first time and you will pat yourself on the back 5 years later when your tub still has a shine and is not peeling. Now let's get down to process.

The re-glazing process can be six to seven steps.

1. Removal of any caulking materials. Silicone is a contaminant and will cause the finish to fish eye. It is important to remove all traces of this by means of a silicone digester
   
   
   
   


2. Next, the old porcelain needs to be etched by means of an acid paste. This process will prepare the surface for the primer
   
   
   
   


3. When the acid etch is complete the surface must be wiped down with a solvent de-greaser to ensure that there are no more contaminants left behind
   
   
   
   


4. Primer - The surface must be primed with an epoxy primer to ensure proper cross hatching of compounds (i.e.-porcelain to primer, primer to finish, finish to clear coat)
   
   
   
   


5. Finish - The surface is then sprayed with an acrylic-urethane resin which can be tinted to any color you desire. It comes in two types, 24hr cure and 72hr cure. The 72hr cure is best if you don't mind waiting the extra time but the 24hr cure is good too.
   
   
   
   


6. Clear coat - The surface is then sprayed with an acrylic urethane clear coat which will kick up the gloss a bit and provide protection from common household chemicals
   
   
   
   


7. If you are refinishing from a previous re-glaze, the finish must be stripped. If this is the case, add this step before the first.

When these steps are followed, you can be sure your re-glaze is going to last for years. A good refinisher will give you at least a 10 year warranty "in writing", now that is cost effective! You will be happy and have just saved at least 70% of the cost of replacement.

MAINTENANCE

With the process you have just done, maintenance will be a breeze. You may also use rubber mats which many re-glazers will not recommend simply because they know it will peel. You will be able to use soft scrub and a white 3M cleaning pad without harming the surface. You will also be able to safely dye your hair without the fear of staining your finish providing the clear coat was used. With this in mind, re-glazing is not only practical but a very cost effective solution to replacement.

Your project when complete will look as though it was installed yesterday saving you $1000s on an install.

Installing a Shower Pan Membrane Liner for a Custom Ceramic Tile Shower

Installing a custom ceramic tile shower in your home is something a do it yourself homeowner can do with a little upfront knowledge. The most important aspect of a successful custom ceramic tile shower installation is properly installing a shower pan membrane liner. The shower pan membrane liner is used to ensure a leak-proof shower.

Shower pan membrane liners are used to funnel any water that seeps through the floor or wall grout to the shower drain below. The shower pan membrane liner is made up of a flexible type of plastic material that sits below a bed of mortar, and the tile, in the shower floor area.

Prior to installing the shower pan membrane liner, the floor of the shower needs to be pre-sloped to ensure that the water will flow towards the shower drain assembly. The pre-slope is accomplished by applying a layer of mortar to the floor of the shower unit area. The layer of mortar is troweled in such as way as to create a gentle slope from the shower wall edges to the center of the shower where the drain resides.

Once the pre-slope mortar has cured, the flexible shower pan membrane liner can then be installed. There are a couple of types of shower pan membrane liners on the market, with each having their own benefits. With either type of membrane, the homeowner needs to form and fold the material into the base of the shower area and secure it to the sides of the shower wall frame with staples and/or nails. In addition, an opening in the membrane should be cut out to allow the adjustable shower drain assembly to slip through.

With the shower pan membrane installed, the cementitious ceramic tile backerboard can then be secured to the framed shower walls. The backerboard is a rigid material that is ideal for attaching tile in wet areas such as a shower stall.

After installing the ceramic tile backerboard, a final coat of mortar needs to be applied on top of the membrane to protect it and to provide a solid base for laying the ceramic floor tile.

With the final coat of mortar cured, the ceramic tile can then be installed in the shower.

Once the tile and grout have been installed, the shower drain assembly should be adjusted so that the drain height sits flush with the finished ceramic tile floor.
